All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

HAPPY YEAR AHEAD DAY!!!

Today I got to spend time with Ms. Foti's Grade 3 class to show them what grade 4 is all about! Here's what they had a chance to experience on Year Ahead Day!

Inquiry into Language:

During our language period, the grade 3s played a fun silent reading game called Game of quotes! Here's how to play, students grab one book each and form a team. They begin silent reading for 1 mintue, then they are told to stop. They are given a prompt and must search within their silent reading book for their answer, they have 30 seconds to find a word, phrase or quote that best matches the prompt. Then they have 30 seconds to deliberate with their group to choose the best quote within their group to share with the rest of the class. Once this is complete students vote individually for the quote they like best. The group with the most votes wins the round!

Today's winners were the Black Shadows!  Great work team!

After music, we read a picture book in order to help the grade 3s identify the fears, worries, or questions that they might have about entering grade 4. We talked a lot about acknowledging the fears or worries that we may have, because it allows us to be honest about how we are feeling and to actively deal with that feeling. After we were finished reading, the grade 3s wrote down a few things that made them nervous about grade 4:

Unit of Inquiry:
In our unit of Inquiry, the grade 3s were given a sneek peak of the grade 4s current unit, Where we are in place and time - The Medieval Times.

We read the first chapter of the novel study that goes along with the unit, The Ghosts in the Churchyard, by Marty Pullin. As part of their novel study, the grade 3s had the chance to be an illustrator to create an alternate book cover for the novel.

The grade 3s also got to label a diagram of a knights armour.

French - Please check Mme. Stella's blog under specialist links.

Physical Education - Please check Mr. Orr's blog under specialist links.

Music - Please check Mr. Oliver's blog under specialist links.

Thank you grade 3s for sharing the day with me and experiencing what it's like to be in grade 4! I hope you had as much fun as I did!
