- Vowel pairs ai and ay make the /a/ sound you hear in waist and fray.
- Diphthongs are different form vowel pairs in that the two vowels blend together to make one sound.
- The diphthongs oi and oy make the /oi/ sound you hear in voices and employ.

Tip:
- When a single consonant come between two vowels in a word, the word is usually divided after the consonant if the first vowel is short, and before the consonant if the vowel is long.
- Short first vowel: mod-ern

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s focused on the living quarters in the Medieval Times. We discovered that people typically in a peasant's cottage, in a manor - usually owned by a lord or a knight, and a castle - usually owned by the king.
We talked about the similarities and differences between each dwelling and found that it was probably better to live in a castle or a manor rather than in a peasants cottage because cottages were made of animal dung, straw and sticks. This means that these structures were not study. They also did not have any doors, so many animals or people could enter at any point of the day. Cottages were also a sign of poverty, all your necessities could be found in one room!
On the other hand, some students said that they best place to live would be at the manor solely for the reason that they were wealthy enough to live a good life, but not as wealthy as the king to make any kind of enemies and risk being under attack.
We also read about the parts of a castle and labelled a diagram. The grade 4s have been challenged to create their own blueprint of their ideal castle - these drawings will be due on Monday, March 2nd. They have also been given the opportunity to create their own miniature castle out of recyclable, and daily materials if they choose - this is not a requirement and will not be graded, it's just a fun activity to try over the weekend!
