All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Inquiry into Math:
Today the grade 4s continued their geometry studies and looked at naming and sorting polygons based on their sides and angles:

Inquiry to Language:
Spelling Lesson 22 - Due to our field trip this Friday, the grade 4s will write their spelling test on Thursday.
Grade 4: vowel pairs ai, ay; diphthongs oi oy
Grade 5: syllables
Tip:
       -        Vowel pairs ai and ay make the /a/ sound you hear in waist and fray.
       -        Diphthongs are different form vowel pairs in that the two vowels blend together to make one sound.
      -       The diphthongs oi and oy make the /oi/ sound you hear in voices and employ.
Tip:
-        When a single consonant come between two vowels in a word, the word is usually divided after the consonant if the first vowel is short, and before the consonant if the vowel is long.
-        Short first vowel: mod-ern
       -        Long first vowel: ma-jor
       -        There are exceptions to the rule, as in wa-ter.
      -       Divide the compound word into two words before dividing it into syllables.

We discussed chapters 15 - 17 of Ghosts in the Churchyard and read chapter 18 as a class. The students are starting to discover the William has a special connection with animals.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s learned about crime and punishment in the middle ages. The grade 4s came to understand that the laws and sentencing during the Middle Ages were not always fair and just. They also agreed that the our current justice system is much more acceptable than they system that was set in place during the Middle Ages.

After our cut and paste activity, we went over to Mrs. DiMascio's classroom to watch an educational video about armour and weapons. We will be having a quiz about armour and knights on Wednesday, February 27th.
