All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Today was Character Day!

The "If you give a mouse a cookie" and crew!

The "Cats in their Hats"

The Paperbag "Prince"

In today's house game, each house had to create their own story based on a title provided by a panel of judges. The stories turned out to be pretty creative and interesting. Great job everyone!

Take a look at what we accomplished today!

Inquiry into Math:
Today we worked through answering the review worksheet questions from our second review package. An optional review package will be sent home tomorrow. We will not be going over those answers as this is an independent review for extra practice before the test on Thursday. If you would like your child to take home the independent review, please email me or send me a message on remind.

Our Unit 3: Geometry Test will be on Thursday, March 5th.

Inquiry to Language:
Spelling Lesson 23 - Spelling is due on Thursday
Grade 4: words with o und ow
Grade 5: syllables
Tip:
     -       Diphthongs ou and ow can make the /ou/ sound ex without or towns
     -       Letters ow can also be a vowel pair  - makes the /o/ sound ex. Hollow
     -       Letters ou can make the /o/ sound in although, the /o/ sound in thought, or the /u. sound un southern
Tip:
-       . when a vowel is sounded alone in a word, it usually forms a syllable by itself as in an – i – mal
-       When a word ends in a consonant + le, divide the word before that consonant, as in ve – hi – cle
     -       These rules will help you spell and pronounce words

For homework the grade 4s need to read chapters 31- 33. Once they have completed the assigned chapters they must complete the activity.

Lights, Camera, Action:

You have been hired as the new screenplay writer for the live action film of Marty Pullin’s, Ghosts in the Churchyard. You have been asked to write a sample script for a scene from chapters 31 – 33 to show the director what you can do! Remember: a script is a set of text that actors and actresses read to create a live dialogue in a movie, play, or broadcast. It also includes directions for each character as well as setting.

** An example has been provided with today's homework.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s continued working on their summatives. Their task is to compare an aspect of the medieval times to the same aspect of present day. They must draw an illustration to show the similarities or the differences, write an essay outlining these aspects and to deliver an announcement about these changes.

Summative outline:

Medieval Times Announcement
Instructions
Working with a partner, you will be researching an aspect of medieval times and comparing it to the same aspect of today’s society. Within your summative, you need to focus on Form – what it is like, Change – how it is changing, how has it changed, and Connection – how is it connected to other things.  For example, you might be researching the delivery of daily news. In this case you would compare ways we receive news today to how people in the medieval times might have received news. In this summative, you will use your notes, books, and the internet to expand your knowledge and understanding of life in the middle ages.

Summative groups:
Charlotte & Emily
Vaibhav & Aashrith
Ali & Lennard
