All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Take a look at what we accomplished today!

Inquiry into Math:
Today we talked about mental math strategies. In our example we added 2500 + 1200 = 3700. We talked about why we were able to add these numbers together so quickly without using pencil and paper. It's because 2500 and 1200 are friendly numbers because they have 0s in the tens place and ones place. We can create friendly numbers to help us mentally add numbers. These are the strategies we worked with today:

Here's some helpful information when remembering how to use a place value chart:

Millions Period
Thousands Period
Units Period

H M
T M
M
H T
T T
T
H
O

Good to know but we won't be working with numbers this high :)
H M – hundred million
T M – ten million
M – million

H T – hundred thousand
T T – ten thousand
T – thousand

H – hundreds
T – tens
O – ones

A copy of this letter has been sent home with your child last week. Please return it to me and I will pass it along to Mrs. Haag.

Inquiry into Language:
Today we read chapter 10 of our Anne of Green Gables novel. We found out that Anne borrowed Marilla's brooch without asking, and somehow managed to lose it. That brooch was very important to Marilla as it was a gift from her mother. As punishment, Marilla forbid Anne from going to the picnic to teach her a lesson in responsiblity. On the day of the picnic, Marilla was cleaning around the house and found the brooch attached to her shawl. Turns out Anne hadn't lost the brooch at all. Marilla quickly apologized and sent Anne off to the picnic.

The task today after reading is to pick a chapter from the reading today and to summarize the events. A sheet has been sent home in the Anne of Green Gables novel study package in order to prepare for tomorrow.

Our next spelling test will be on Friday, September 27th.
