The Midweek Update - Day 39

Good Afternoon Families!

Please read all the information below to get the latest scoop on our day! 

Reminders

- Thursday, October 31st is our Halloween/ Harvest spirit day. Students are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes to school. No masks, weapons, or scary face paint please.

- Polar Expressions is back again this year and they are looking for students to have the chance to publish poems and short stories in an upcoming book. Information sheets have been sent. Students who are interested in this competition can do so on their own time, as class time will not be given. The deadline for poems is November 29^th and the deadline for short stories is December 6^th.

- Casual Day - Just a reminder that casual day forms are due by Friday, October 25. Please submit the form indicating if your child(ren) will or will not be participating.  Please note that Casual Day was not included in registration this year, so if you would like your child(ren) to participate, please submit the form and $20 cash payment.

- Winter uniforms started  Tuesday, October 15th. All students in Grade 4-6 will need to have all pieces of the winter uniform with them everyday. The winter uniform consists of SJA gray pants/skirt, navy blue socks and black dress shoes (which they already have), a white button up long sleeve crested SJA shirt, a navy blue SJA crested sweater/sweater vest, an academic and house colour tie (to be worn every Friday) and an SJA crested blazer. Please be sure to label all pieces! Blazers must be worn during transitions and around the school, but can be taken off while in class and during lunch. If you do not have any of these pieces please contact Alpa as soon as possible at alpa@multiformcanada.com.

Please note that the uniform store will be closed from October 15th to October 24th. If you need to purchase any uniforms please make sure all orders are placed by October 10th 2019 by email: alpa@multiformcanada.com or online www.multiformcanada.com.

November Lunches - The lunch site is now open. It will close Wednesday, October 30th at 3:00pm
Special of the month: Chicken Stir Fry which is available every Friday. All payments are to be made through quickbooks by November 6th.

Lost & Found - Please have aa look through the lost and found items, now located in the gym, as the school will be donating all left over items to the Salvation Army on November 4th at 4pm.

Inquiry into Math:

Today we continued to explore volume by relating volume and capacity:

Exploring Volume using Displacement! 

Remember:
V = l x w x h
    =      u³

Here is an example:

Since we are working with 3-Dimensional figures, our answer will be represented in cubic units - the units used to measure volume. The volume of a unit cube whose length, width and height are 1 unit each is 1 cubic unit. If the type of measurement is stated (cm, m, mm, etc.) then, for example, our answer would be cm³. 

Inquiry into Language:

Spelling Lesson 8 - spelling activities are due today. Our spelling test will be on Friday.

Grade 4 Spelling – Consonant Blends	Grade 5 Spelling
Objective: To spell words with r-controlled vowels TIP: when the letter r comes after a vowel or vowels, it sometimes changes the sound of the vowel         -          Heat – heart (ar)         -          Spot – sport (or)         -          Cub – curb (ur)	Objective:  to spell words in which the  vowel pair ee spells the long e sound, vowel pair ea spells the long e sound, and vowel digraph ea spells the short e sound TIP: ·        Vowel pair – two vowels come together to make long vowel sound ·       ee – long e in speech ·       ea – long e in underneath ·       ea (digraph- long or short sound) – short e in steady

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive

2.     Define your bonus words

3.     Complete spelling lesson activities

4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays

5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

Unit of Inquiry:

Today we explored light and colour with Bill Nye the Science Guy:

One of the cool things we learned today was that the primary colours for light are not the same as the primary colours that we use when we are painting. The primary colours for light are RED, BLUE and GREEN.

After our video we created colour wheels! We used red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Then we poked 2 holes through our wheels and threaded string through them. We wound up the strings and pulled tight, when the colours blended together we saw white! This proves that white light is made up of many colours. 

I have sent home our Annual Science Fair package. Please read through and sign the package to indicate that you have read it through with your child. Please ensure that the Science Fair Package is returned to school tomorrow as I will be keeping track of each child's package. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to email me.
