Quote of the Day - Bringing a little inspiration to your day!
Take a look at what we accomplished today!
Inquiry into Math:
Today we started Unit 9 - Length, Perimeter, & Area. We started off by reviewing the basics, linear dimensions - when you measure the length, width, height, thickness, or depth of an object.
We also worked on relating units of measure. We reviewed the different relationships between the units we use to measure objects. See the example below:
After we reviewed this idea, we discussed how reasonable it would be to use each unit of measurement. We discovered that smaller items can typicall be measured in mm or cm. Medium sized objects can be measure in dm, or m. In terms of distances the Grade 4s said that it is unreasonable to use any other measurement than m or km because any other unit would be much too small.
This sparked a discussion about hectometers (a grouping of 100 m) and decameters (a grouping of 10 m), even though we have a name for these units of measure, why does't anyone ever use them? Their conclusion was this: these units of measure are simply a grouping of meters, instead of reading something as 200m some might say 2 hm, but its just as easy to say 200 m. So it all depends on preferance. To some it may be unreasonable, but to others hm and dm may be simpler.

Unit of Inquiry:
The Grade 4s did a great job today presenting their Science Fair Summatives.
I am so proud of all the grade 4s for all of the hard work and effort they put into their summatives. They really showed off their knowledge about light and sound today! The winners for each grade will be announced next week.
