All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Discord Day 4

Good Morning Families!

Please read all the information below to get the latest scoop on our daily activities and lessons!

If you have not had a chance to register your child for my classroom, please use the following link to meet with me on a daily basis: https://discord.gg/cByfWxr.

Students will only need to be logged into our Discord classroom during these times:
Math - 9:00 - 9:20
Language - 12:00 - 1:00 (we may not be chatting during the entire period, so you can log on only when you have a question)
UOI - 2:15 - 3:00 (we may not be chatting during the entire period, so you can log on only when you have a question)

Here is the schedule for the day:

I will be sending the necessary class materials for each class the night before via email. If there are any extra worksheets I will send them throughout the day. I will post any necessary links in our discord classroom as well.

Students are expected to think of our discord classroom the same way they would about our regular classroom. It is not set up to be a chatroom, but I do encourage students to use it to work together and ask each other question when doing daily activities. Students are expected to be logged out of our discord classroom by 3:00 pm everyday (dismissal), but if you need me I will be available on Discord until 5:00 pm for any extra questions that you might have. After 5 pm I will be logged out of our discord classroom, but I will check my email periodically until 6:30 pm for any urgent questions.

We will have more access to one another, but it is important that we all take a break from our devices to spend time on our hobbies, or time with our family members. COVID-19 has caused a great deal of uncertainty for us, and may continue to do so, but a positive that we can take from this is more time spent with the ones that we love!

Unit 7:  Transformations!

Today's concept is tough, but guess what, you are tougher! So let's do this!

Types of Transformations: We are focusing on 3 kinds of transformations - translations, rotations, and reflections.

Real world examples:

Reflection: When you look into a mirror!

Rotation: When you pivot in basketball!

Translation: Moving from one spot to the other - walking!

Reflections
A reflection is a flip over a the mirror line (line of reflection). The line of reflection is equal distance to both the 2-D shape and the reflected image. You can have a horizontal reflection line or a vertical reflection line.

This is a horizontal reflection:

This is a vertical reflection:

Translations
In a translation or slide, a shape is moved along a straight line without turning. The shape in the new position is called a translation image of the shape. The translation is described by the number of squares moved right or left and up or down.

Rotations
When a shape is turned around a fixed point, it is called rotation or turn. The shape may be turned clockwise or counterclockwise about the point. After one complete turn, the shape is back where it started.
You can also call these turns: 1/4 (quarter turn), 1/2 turn (half turn, 180 degrees), 3/4 (three-quarter turn), 4/4 (full turn, 360 degrees). See example below:
Watch this video for examples on how to translate, reflect, and rotate a figure:

Textbook work: MMS pg. 233 # 1, 2, 4, and 5   I will be available for questions!

Learning Goals: students will rotate, reflect, and translate figures
- students will understand congruence

Novel Study – Read Aloud

Today students will have a quiz on chapters 1-6 After the quiz, we will continue reading Brendan Buckley's Universe and Everything in it. Students should have read chapter 6 and chapter 7 for homework. We will read chapter 8 as a class. Then we will finish off with our literature circle discussion.
Here is a list of roles for each student for today's literature circle. Each session students will have a different role.

Learning Goal:  Students will...
- Make connections to rocks and minerals UOI, other books, and their own life
- Make predictions
- Literature circle – Discussion of roles – students will need to record notes for their given role for each set of chapter groupings.

Reading - Raz Kids

Duration: 2:00 - 2:15

Log on to Raz Kids to complete your assigned text for the day. Students will read their assigned text each day to continue building on their reading skills. They should listen to the text, read the text, and then complete the quiz. Be sure to look up any words you are unfamiliar with – create your own dictionary. Raz Kids activities are expected to be completed daily. If it has not been completed during the day, you can take some time in the evening to complete it.

Learning Goals: Students will read independently. Students will answer comprehension questions about the text.

Daily Word Ladder Fun!

Word ladders are extra worksheets for you to have fun with. You will receive a word ladder from Tuesday - Thursday. You are required to complete these worksheets, but you do not have to hand all of them in, pick the two that you like the most and hand them in via email on Fridays.

Learning Goals: Students will use the clues that are given to generate words that match each clue.

Unit of Inquiry
Sharing the planet: Rocks & Minerals
Duration: 2:15 - 3:00

We are beginning our 5th unit about Rocks and Minerals:

Central Idea: Human activity involving rocks and minerals affects the environment in various ways.

Key Concepts:
          ·   Causation
          ·   Responsibility
          ·   Perspective

Lines of Inquiry:
          ·   The non-living cycles in our environment.  (Causation)
          ·   Mining  (Perspective)
          ·   The impact of humans on the nature of the landscape (Responsibility)

        Related Concepts:
          ·   Cycles
          ·   Opinion

Today the grade 4s will be given time to collect rocks and try to identify what rock type they are. The three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic

Use this chart to see if you can match up the rocks that you found:

Here is an example of what your observations should look like when you're rock collecting:

I have sent a blank document via email, and on discord for the rock collecting activity this afternoon. The goal of this lesson is to explore! So don’t worry if you don’t know what all the terms mean at first, you can look them up, or make connections as you go. Just try being a geologist/mineralogist and have fun!

Be ready to share your favourite rock during class time tomorrow.

Remember! – If you are hunting outside for rocks please wear gloves as they can be sharp.
Also, you can bring a camera to take pictures of your rocks. If you plan on keeping your rocks, please make sure that you wash them thoroughly, and then wash your hands again when you are done.

Happy Hunting!

Also, be sure to record your observations on your rock crystal, remember to use the format below. Send your observations to me via email.
