Reminders
- Thursday, September 19th is our SJA and Oakwood Welcome Back BBQ, which will take place from 4:00-5:30 PM out in our back-recess area. Order forms have been sent home. Please return, along with cash, no later than Friday, September 13th.
For those of you who are attending the BBQ tomorrow, I have put the BBQ tickets in the front pouch of the students agendas. Please ensure you bring these tomorrow to the BBQ to receive your meals.

- SJA Gr. 4-6 Coed Soccer Tournament Team Tryouts: Tryouts will be held on Tuesday, September 17th, and on Wednesday, September 18th after school from 3:50 - 4:45pm. Tryouts will take place on the outdoor turf field. Please bring the appropriate gear to participate. Students can be picked up between 4:45 and 5:00 from tryouts. All students who are remainding will be signed into after.

Polar Expressions is back again this year and they are looking for students to have the chance to publish poems and short stories in an upcoming book. Information sheets have been sent. Students who are interested in this competition can do so on their own time, as class time will not be given. The deadline for poems is November 29th and the deadline for short stories is December 6th. - The class will be starting the writing process with Mrs. Hayward at our next Library period.

Inquiry into Math:
Today we check over our answers during our second review session, things are looking pretty good for our first math test. Mrs. Di Mascio kindly created a third review package! This is an optional worksheet, so each child will receive one and they have the decision to complete it on their own. We will not be checking over our answers as the test will be written tomorrow.

Concepts:
Input/Output Machine: Terms are presented in a chart; input numbers are on the right and out put numbers are on the left. To obtain an output number we must apply an operation (addition, subtract, multiplication, or division) to our input numbers.
Growing Patterns: A pattern where each term is greater than the previous one.
Shrinking Patterns: A pattern where each term is less than the previous one.
Alternating Patterns: A pattern where the operation used or term alternates getting bigger and then smaller (or vice versa).
Pattern Rule: Describes how to make a pattern.
Operation: Something done to a number or quantity. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are operations.
Inquiry into Language:
Today we began our novel study: Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. We read chapter 1 as a class, and then the kids took the time to read chapters 2 and 3. As we continue to follow Anne's journey, there will be comprehension activies to complete.

Objective: to spell one- and two- syllable words with short vowel sounds

· When a c or g is followed by the vowel e , I, or y, it usually spells its soft sound

Spelling procedures are as follows:
1. Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2. Define your bonus words
3. Complete spelling lesson activities
4. Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5. Study for spelling tests nightly
How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

Today the kids had to discover the Canadian Shield and the Hudson's Bay Lowlands on their own. In groups they read through each package and deciphered what information was important enough to write down in their notes.
