All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Library with Mrs. Hayward:
Today the class discussed the Polar Expressions Competition with Mrs. Hayward.

Polar Expressions is back again this year and they are looking for students to have the chance to publish poems and short stories in an upcoming book. Information sheets have been sent. Students who are interested in this competition can do so on their own time, as class time will not be given. The deadline for poems is November 29th and the deadline for short stories is December 6th

Some students signed out a few short stories and poetry books to look at some examples.

It's also National Talk Like a Pirate Day. What's your pirate name?

Inquiry into Math:
Today we wrote our Number Patterns Unit Test. Test Scores will be sent home for review as soon as they are all graded.

Our next unit will be Whole Numbers. We will be writing our show what you know pre-assessment tomorrow. Don't worry, it's just a quick check to see what we already know about the unit.

Sign up for Caribou Math:

A copy of this letter has been sent home with your child. Please return it to me and I will pass it along to Mrs. Haag.

Inquiry into Language:
Today we read chapter 4 of Anne of Green Gables in class. We learned that Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert were not expecting a girl at all. Matthew appears to like Anne, but it seems that it's taking Marilla a little more time to warm up to here. So far, the plan is to send Anne back to the orphanage in exchange for a boy, but Anne is trying to talk Marilla out of it. Stay tuned to find out what happens to Anne next.

Spelling Lesson 2 test: Friday, September 20th

Grade 4 Spelling
Grade 5 Spelling
Objective: to spell one- and two- syllable words with short vowel sounds
TIP:
  • If a word or syllable has a vowel and it comes at the beginning or between two consonants, it usually stands for the short-vowel sound
Objective: to spell words with the hard and soft c and g sounds
TIP:
·       When a c or g is followed by the vowel e , I, or y, it usually spells its soft sound
·       When c or g is followed by a, o, or u, it usually spells its hard sound

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2.     Define your bonus words
3.     Complete spelling lesson activities
4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

Unit of Inquiry:
Don't forget, there will be a  re-test for our first map quiz tomorrow: Friday, September 20th. Please study your map.

The kids continued to discover the Canadian Shield and the Hudson's Bay Lowlands on their own. We are quickly approaching the end of our physical regions trip, only 3 more stops to go. Once the class has learned all they can about Canada's physical regions, they will be creating a 3D map of each region using the information they learned over the past week. This activity will begin on Monday.
