All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Reading Buddies with Ms. Bannon’s Class:

Inquiry into Math:
Today we checked over last nights homework. We worked on breaking down the word problems and finding the necessary information needed to create our patterns. We were able to recognize patterns from our input numbers to our output numbers and the patterns between our output numbers.  We also took some time to review our multiplication skills. We specifically focused on strategies to solve 1-digit by 2-digit multication.

We have begun our review for our first unit test - pg. 22 - 23 # 1 - 6 - due Tuesday, September 15
Our unit test is coming soon: Thursday, September 19th

Concepts:
Input/Output Machine: Terms are presented in a chart; input numbers are on the right and out put numbers are on the left. To obtain an output number we must apply an operation (addition, subtract, multiplication, or division) to our input numbers.

Growing Patterns: A pattern where each term is greater than the previous one.

Shrinking Patterns: A pattern where each term is less than the previous one.

Alternating Patterns: A pattern where the operation used or term alternates getting bigger and then smaller (or vice versa).

Pattern Rule: Describes how to make a pattern.

Operation: Something done to a number or quantity. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are operations.

Inquiry into Language:

Today we wrote our first spelling test. Please have your child correct any misspelled words 10 times each. Once complete please sign the test. We also had some time to play another round of Game of Quotes!

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2.     Define your bonus words
3.     Complete spelling lesson activities
4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

Unit of Inquiry:

Today we continued working on their Terry Fox Web quest worksheets. In the morning we participated in the Terry Fox Run. Way to go everyone. Thank you for continuing his legacy and for your generous donations!

For homework, the kids are tasked with mapping Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope Route. I have provided a worksheet for them to plot Terry Fox’s route. Use the internet, books, videos, etc. to assist you in completing the route.

We will be having a quiz on the provinces, territories, and capital cities of Canada on Monday, September 16th.

Music - Please check Mr. Oliver's blog under specialist links.
