Inquiry into Math:
Spelling Lesson 17 have been marked. Please review your child's score and have them correct any misspelled words 10 times each.
The grade 4s have completed their rough drafts of their speeches! Now it is time to work on their good copies and memorizing their speech. I have advised each student to start out by timing themselves as they read through their speech. This will help them determine if they need to add more information (speech will be under 3 minutes), or if they need to take out some information (speech is over 5 minutes). Once they have figured out the timing, they cause use their time to start their good copy (must be done independently). They can either write their good copy by hand or type it on their device. Good copies are due on Friday, January 31st.
We are now entering the memorizing phase of our speeches. As your child completes their good copy they should also be setting aside some time to memorize their speech. It is recommended that they memorize their speech paragraph by paragraph. The grade 4 competition will be held on February 4th and/or 5th. From our in class competition the grade 4 teaching team will select 3 students from each class (a total of 6 students) to represent the grade 4s.
The Annual Oral Competition for grades 4 - 8 will be held on Friday, February 7th. All speeches need to be memorized and should be within 3 - 5 minutes.
Tips to remember:
- proper punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar
- voice and style - develop a distinct tone the sets your writing/speech apart from others
- defining unknown terms - help your audience develop their vocabulary
- detail - explain things so that your audience can easily understand
- descriptive language - don't give all the details away, build up to it, make it exciting/interesting
- formatting - in order to meet the time requirement (3-5 mins) consider the length of each paragraph
The grade 4s are encouraged to visit their local library to collect books, videos, etc. that will help them to continue to develop their speech. Please ensure that your child brings any research materials in order to continue working on their speech.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s presented their research on Islamic festivals, beliefs, and symbols.
Once the presentations were complete, we discussed our next summative task. Each group has chosen two religions that they have either learned about during our unit, or religions that they would like to learn about to complete a comparison assignment. They will discover the similarities and differences between their chosen religions and present their findings to the class via a story book, brochure or news report/interview. More details will be given on Monday.
For now, each group has been asked to collect some information about their chosen religions in order to being working on their summatives on Monday.
Here are the groups:
Raiyan & Vaibhv - Hinduism + Islam
Ali & Meekaal - Judaism + Islam
Bilal & Lennard - Taoism + Islam
Alexa & Charlotte - Christianity + Judaism
Aashrith & Jacob - Taoism + Hinduism
Julia & Isabella - Christianity + Native Spirituality
Honor & Emily - Hinduism + Catholicism
Neel & Abdul - Islam + Sikhism
