Inquiry into Math:
Today the grade 4s learned how to order and compare decimals. We used number lines to help make connections between decimals and our base 10 blocks.
Some times it can be a little confusing when it comes to ordering decimals because some decimals look so similar to others. For example: 0.1, 0.05, 0.12 - when ordering decimals from greatest to least (or least to greatest) things can be made easier by making equivalent decimals. So change 0.1 to 0.10! Now we can easily order our decimals from greatest to least without any confusion: 0.12, 0.1, 0.05

Inquiry into Language:
Spelling Lesson 17 - Don't forget, there is a spelling test tomorrow. Please study your list words and review the tip for the lesson!
The grade 4s have been using their language period to continue writing their speech. It is important for your child to come to school everyday with their own device, books, etc. to ensure that they have a source of information to write their informative speech. We are hoping to be complete the first draft by the end of this week so that they can begin memorizing their speech and completing their good copy for next week.
The grade 4s worked very hard today. The majority of the class is ready to begin writing or typing their good copy of their speech. If your child wishes to type their speech, please ensure that they bring either a laptop or a tablet to school tomorrow that has access to Microsoft Word or google docs. If your child does not have access to these programs they will have to write their speech out by hand. Good copies of speeches are due Friday, January 31.
We are now entering the memorizing phase of our speeches. As your child completes their good copy they should also be setting aside some time to memorize their speech. It is recommended that they memorize their speech paragraph by paragraph. The grade 4 competition will be held on February 4th and/or 5th. From our in class competition the grade 4 teaching team will select 3 students from each class (a total of 6 students) to represent the grade 4s.
Yesterday we discussed explaining our information by including more details. It is important that your child writes as if their audience does not have any prior knowledge about their subject. In order for their speech to be clear and understood, they must get into the habit of explaining complex terms, ideas, and giving the audience reasons why their information is important. This will allow the audience to follow their speech with ease.
The Annual Oral Competition for grades 4 - 8 will be held on Friday, February 7th. All speeches need to be memorized and should be within 3 - 5 minutes.
Tips to remember:
- proper punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar
- voice and style - develop a distinct tone the sets your writing/speech apart from others
- defining unknown terms - help your audience develop their vocabulary
- detail - explain things so that your audience can easily understand
- descriptive language - don't give all the details away, build up to it, make it exciting/interesting
- formatting - in order to meet the time requirement (3-5 mins) consider the length of each paragraph
The grade 4s are encouraged to visit their local library to collect books, videos, etc. that will help them to continue to develop their speech. Please ensure that your child brings any research materials in order to continue working on their speech.
Grade 4: Words ending with y: adding er and est
|
Grade 5: prefixes sub, mid,bi, and tri
|
Tip: adjectives ending in er compare two things, adjectives ending in est compare three or more things
To add er or est to an adjective that ends in y, change the y to I first
Ex. Happy + er = happiest
Happy + est = happiest
|
Tip: sub – usually means under, below, or not quite
Mid – means in the middle or part
Bi – usually means two
Tri – usually mean three
Ex. Subside, midday, bisect, tripod
