All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Dear SJA Families,

Quote of the Day - Bringing a little inspiration to your day!

Take a look at what we accomplished today!
Reading Buddies with Ms. Bannon's Class:
It's been a long time since the grade 4s have seen their reading buddies, it was so nice for the SKs to spend some quality reading time with their buddies.

Inquiry into Math:
Today the grade 4s reviewed the data management concepts that they reviewed before they left for Holiday Break. They took some time to practice finding the mean, median, mode, and range.

Mean: This is computed by adding all of the numbers in the set of data together and dividing by the number elements contained in the data set.
ex. data set = 2, 5, 9, 3, 5, 4, 7
Number of elements in data set = 7
mean = (2 + 5 + 9 + 5 + 4 + 3)/ 7 = 5

Median: To find the median, reorder the data set from the smallest to the largest, then if the number of elements are odd the the median is the element in the middle of the data set. If the number of elements are even, then the median is the average of the two middle terms.
ex. data set = 2, 5, 9, 3, 5, 4, 7
reorder - 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9
                           ^
median = 5

Mode: The mode is the element that occurs the most often. The data set can have more than one mode. This happens when two or more elements occur with equal frequency in the data set. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. A data set with three modes is called trimodal.
ex. data set = 2, 5, 9, 3, 5, 4, 7, 9

Mode = 5 & 9 (bimodal)

Range: The range is the difference between the largest value and the smallest value contained in the data set. First, reorder the data set from smallest to largest, then subtract the first element from the last element.
ex. data set = 2, 5, 9, 3, 5, 4, 7
reorder - 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9
range = 9 - 7
          = 2

The final show what you know test will be in the form of an assignment. Students will conduct a survey. They will then use the data that they have collected and they must create charts and graphs. They will also have follow up questions at the end of their assignment. This will take place on Thursday, January 16th and Friday, January 17th.

Inquiry into Language:
Due to a short week, we will resume our spelling lessons on Monday, January 13th and continue to follow a regular schedule.

Today we reviewed our journal recount writing skills. In pairs, the class worked on identifying their journal elements in their journals that they wrote over the Holiday break. With their partner, they also did some editing to ensure that they were using the proper recount format, as well as using proper, spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and capitals.

The grade 4s will have the opportunity to continue practicing their journal recount writing in order to prepare for their OWA post test on Tuesday, January 14th.

Over the Holiday Break, your child was given the task of brainstorming and doing some light research on at least 3 topics that they were interested in. Starting tomorrow, we will begin learning how to write an informative speech. Please ensure that your child comes to school with their speech package with the appropriate pages complete.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s focused on identifying Jewish symbols and celebrations. They used their devices to look up either a symbol or celebration that they selected from a jar. Once they had their selection their job was to find some information about their symbol or celebration and prepare a short presentation to share with the class. Tomorrow there will be time for each student to present their findings to the class. Once the presentations are complete, I will compile their notes so that each student has a copy of the information.
