All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Take a look at what we accomplished today!

Inquiry into Math:
Today the grade 4s worked on creating bar graphs and pictographs. When creating a graph, it is important to organize your data first, this will make it easier when you go to create your graph. In order for other people to understand the data that you have graphed, it is important to label your graph with a title, label your x and y axis and to use the appropriate scales and intervals.

The Grade 4s used intervals to help them organize their data in their textbook question 1c. Here is the data that they worked with:

Creating intervals - when creating intervals the groups must be equal

Once your Graph is complete you can interpret your data and make comparisons.

Pictographs - This is another way to represent data using pictures. Here is an example below:

Inquiry into Language:
Due to a short week, we will resume our spelling lessons on Monday, January 13th and continue to follow a regular schedule.

Today the grade 4s began learned the writing format for their informational speech. We used the "hamburger" method to help break down each paragraph. We also discussed that their speeches are meant to be purely informative. They are not trying to persuade their audience, they are simply giving them more insightful information about a specific topic. Here is what we came up with today:

The grade 4s will have the opportunity to continue practicing their journal recount writing in order to prepare for their OWA post test on Tuesday, January 14th.

Unit of Inquiry:
Today the grade 4s learned about Anne Frank. We read this book:

We had a really good discussion about Anne's life and how unfair it was for Jews to be treated differently because of their religious practices. The grade 4s were able to share their opinions about what Hitler and the Nazis was wrong, and why and how they stand up to do what is right if something like this were to happen today. Great discussion class!

The grade 4s also learned about the Hebrew alphabet. For homework, they have been challenged to write their first and last name in Hebrew. If they are having difficulty, they may use the Internet or use books to help them after they have made a few attempts.
