- As per last year, I will continue to use an app called remind, initially I was going to switch over to Bloomz, but why change what has already been working so well. Through this app I will send updates about important class information. I will also use it as another form of communication if your child may be away or if you have any questions about homework. My office hours for the app will be from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm. To get started on the app, simply download Remind via your app store and join my class using the link below:

Please let me know if you have any problems with the link.
- The last page of the Family Handbook and September hot lunch payments are due by Friday, September 13th. Our Terry Fox Run will also be taking place this day. Students are encouraged to come to school in their SJA gym unform.
- Thursday, September 19th is our SJA and Oakwood Welcome Back BBQ, which will take place from 4:00-5:30 PM out in our back recess area. Order forms have been sent home. Please return, along with cash, no later than Friday, September 13th.

Quote of the Day:
What a way to wrap up NEOPHYTE Week. We even had some representatives from each house decorate the house point jars!!
The house games were pretty intense. So far we have Zeta in first place, Theta in second, and Kappa in third.
Inquiry into Math:
Today we started our first lesson in our Number Patterns Unit: Number Patterns and Pattern Rules.
We discovered that we can have Growing Patterns, Shrinking Patterns, and Alternating Patterns. These were the definitions the class came up with:
Growing Patterns: A pattern where each term is greater than the previous one.
Shrinking Patterns: A pattern where each term is less than the previous one.
Alternating Patterns: A pattern where the operation used or term alternates getting bigger and then smaller (or vice versa).
Pattern Rule: Describes how to make a pattern.
Operation: Something done to a number or quantitiy. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are operations.
Here are some examples of patterns:
We learned that it is important to be specific when stating pattern rules; this helps other people to solve your pattern or to continue adding terms to your pattern.
Inquiry into Language:
We are going to be starting our first novel study very soon. Before we start, I thought it would be helpful to give the class a mini lesson on paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting. As they look back to their novels for information, it is important that they know the difference.
The class worked in partners by telling their partner about their favourite summer memory, then it was their partners job to paraphrase what they said. Each group did a great job!
Unit of Inquiry:
Today we looked at our first Unit of Inquiry: How we organize ourselves - Oh Canada!
Today we highlighted some key words in our central idea to hone in on what our focus will be for this unit. Then we tried to define each of our highlighted words to make sure that we had a clear understanding of what each one meant.
Then we wrote down things that we might already know about Canada and things that we are curious about. By the end of our unit, we will be able to move those sticky notes to the "Things Learned" section of our KWL Chart.
We also took some time to discuss some of the things that we already know about Canada and the experiences that we have had in the country.
To further our inquiry, your child is encouraged to bring in any artifacts, items, or books that are related to our unit (be sure to lable all items with your child's name on it).
