All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Quote of the Day:

We had an old friend return to SJA and start her first day with us:

We are so glad to have herjoin the Room 15 Crew!

One of our friends lost a tooth today!

Inquiry into Math:
Today we created and manipulated number patterns using input and output machines. Now we can see patterns in our input numbers, patterns in our output numbers, and patterns between our input and output numbers:

Here's an example from class today:

We caught on to things pretty quickly and began working through questions in our Math Makes Sense textbooks.

Learned Concepts:
Input/Output Machine: Terms are presented in a chart, input numbers are on the right and out put numbers are on the left. To obtain an output number we must apply an operation ( addition, subtract, multiplication, or division) to our input numbers.

Growing Patterns: A pattern where each term is greater than the previous one.

Shrinking Patterns: A pattern where each term is less than the previous one.

Alternating Patterns: A pattern where the operation used or term alternates getting bigger and then smaller (or vice versa).

Pattern Rule: Describes how to make a pattern.

Operation: Something done to a number or quantity. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are operations.

Inquiry into Language:

Today we started our fist lesson in spelling:

Grade 4 Spelling
Grade 5 Spelling
Objective: To spell words with single and double consonants
TIP:
  • consonants are all the letters of the alphabet except a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y
  • Most words you can hear all the consonants – wild
  • Some words have double consonants which you can’t hear – banner
Objective: To spell words with the sound of k, kw, and n
TIP:
·       Sometimes words are not spelled in the way your expect – earthquake – sounds like kw but is qu
·       Kn in knocked makes the n sound
·       K sound can be spelled several ways – k in shake, ch in mechanic, ck in quickly

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2.     Define your bonus words
3.     Complete spelling lesson activities
4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

We also brushed up on our cursive skills. To start we worked through some of the letters of the alphabet. Tomorrow we will work through the rest of the alphabet and then we will begin to work on connect our letters.

Unit of Inquiry:
In the morning the kids wrote a pop quiz on the provinces, territories, and capital cities of Canada. In the afternoon we went back and learned exactly where each province, territory, and capital cities are using this video:

Some of the students even brought in artifacts that they have from Canada.

Music - Please check Mr. Oliver's blog under specialist links.
French - Please check Mme. Stella's blog under specialist links.

Ask your child how the rest of their day went, because I'm sure they can't wait to share it all with you!
