All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Inquiry into Language:

Today a group of the grade 4 presented some information to the rest of PYP about Orange Shirt Day.

Thank you grade 4s for your care and hard work and teaching us all that
EVERY CHILD MATTERS!

Our annual International Day is quickly approaching and will take place on Thursday, October 17th. This year the country we will be learning about is Brazil. Next week we will begin dedicating some of our Language periods to divide up the project responsibilities, researching and putting together a fabulous presentation on our country. Partners or small groups will research one of the following topics; clothing, food, imports/exports, laws/regulations, holidays, sports/toys, etc. Students will need devices and books from a local library to complete their research. Thank you for your support.

Spelling lesson 4 activities are due on Wednesday. Our test will be on Thursday this week due to the Glow Zone field trip on Friday.

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2.     Define your bonus words
3.     Complete spelling lesson activities
4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

We read chapter 16 of our Anne of Green Gables novel. Anne got herself into a bit of trouble. She and her friends were trying to reenact their favourite romance at the pond. While Anne was acting out the scene, her boat began to leak! The girls ran to find help, but Anne thought quickly and grabbed onto a branch and pulled her self to safety. Gilbert saw what was going on and decided to help Anne. Since Gilbert's rescued Anne, he thought it was the perfect time to ask Anne to finally be friends, but Anne was so upset with Gilbert that she rejected his proposal. Anne walked away feeling a little bad about the whole thing, what if she and Gilbert should be friends after all?

Your child's task is to finish reading chapter 17 & 18 for tomorrow's class. They also must complete their novel study page - Connector. For this page your child must use the text and make connections to their everyday life. Tomorrow we will share our connections with the class.

Unit of Inquiry:
Our next quiz will be coming up this Thursday. This time our quiz will be about the physical regions of Canada. Please study each region and know the following criteria: physical features, climate, vegetation, animal life, and natural resources.

We are still working on our 3D physical regions map. So far we have outlined the provinces to show where the boarders are and we have covered each physical region. To finish things off we need to name each province, capital cities and create a compass and legend so that other people can read our maps!

Tomorrow we will be discussing what a natural resource is. See if your child can define a natural resource and name one that they are familiar with.

French - Please check Mme. Stella's blog under specialist links.
Physical Education - Please check Mr. Orr's blog under specialist links.

Ask your child how the rest of their day went, because I'm sure they can't wait to share it all with you!
