All About Me

My name is Nicole Samuel and I am one of the Grade 4 teachers for this upcoming school year. I have been a teacher at SJA since January 2018 and this will be my third-year teaching Grade 4.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University Elementary Education Program and an Alum of the CMU Women’s Soccer Team.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy being physically active (soccer is my favourite sport, go Manchester United!), watching movies, working on "do it yourself" crafts, and spending time with my family. I can hardly wait to get to know all of you!

Take a look at what we accomplished today!

Inquiry into Math:
Today we focused on counting and estimating money.

Inquiry into Language:

Today we worked on developing our rough draft on our light and sound inventions. Most students have a good understanding of the format. Now it is time to focus on our sentence structure and putting our information into our own words.

Spelling procedures are as follows:

1.     Copy your spelling words into your agendas in cursive
2.     Define your bonus words
3.     Complete spelling lesson activities
4.     Hand in completed spelling activities on Wednesdays
5.     Study for spelling tests nightly

How do I know if I know my spelling words? Well, can you use them in a sentence? Can you define the word to someone else? Do you know other words that have the same meanings (synonyms)? Do you know words that mean the opposite?

Unit of Inquiry:
Before we moved on to our lesson of the day, we talked about what happens to our eyes when we are in the dark. We observed our eyes with a partner when they are exposed to light. The we closed our eyes for 30 seconds, after that we quickly looked at each others eyes and noticed that our pupils were much bigger than before. This is because when there is a good amount of light our pupils are small because they do not need to work as hard, but in the dark they become larger because there is not a sufficient emount of light, so the become larger to help us see better in those conditions. Pretty neat stuff!

Tody we watched a couple of educational videos to help us learn about the eyes and the ears. There are so many intricate details that help us to see and to hear!

We had a lot of curious questions over the last couple of days:

What is bioluminesence? - we have discussed this a lot in class! Its a really cool topic!
What do you call the colourful dots that you see when your eyes are closed?
Are your dreams related to your eyes and light?

Help your child to explore some of these questions!

French - Please check Mme. Stella's blog under specialist links.
Physical Education- Please check Mr. Orr's blog under specialist links.
Music - Please check Mr. Oliver's blog under speacialist links.

Ask your child how the rest of their day went, because I'm sure they can't wait to share it all with you!
